WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE EXEMPLARY INSTITUTE

 MS. GLORIA HALE
, Director of Federal Projects, Grants-Cibola County Schools, NM: “The Exemplary Institute has done more for Indian education than anything else in history.”
MS. MARTINA ASHLEY, Assistant Director, Fort McDowell Education Department, AZ former Principal, Sanders Elementary School: “I have used the materials I got from the Exemplary Institute every day since I got home. I took the materials and tabbed them so I could find things easily, and I keep the Proceedings book on my desk so it is easy to access. The EI was the best conference I have ever attended.”

MS. BETTY OJAYE, Director, Navajo Preparatory School, NM: “Have you read the book ‘Exemplary Programs in Indian Education’? If you haven’t, you need to read it from cover to cover. We used it as a guide to develop our college preparation program, and we have sent between 63% and 100% of our graduates on to college for a dozen years.”,

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Mr. Todd Bergman is the Curriculum Director for Mount Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, Alaska, one of the original Exemplary Programs in Indian Education. MEHS may be the only U. S. school that has completely implemented Total Quality Management in its programs. The TQM model, first developed by the famed W. Edwards Deming and implemented almost nationwide in Japan starting in 1947, is the most revolutionary and successful management technique ever developed. Todd will be assisted by Michele Morningstar (Oneida), the Diversity Executive with IBM and the partner with MEHS in its Partner in Education (PIE) program.

Mr. Stacy Phelps is the Department Chairman of the Math and Science Department at Oglala Lakota College. He is also the Director of the South Dakota GEAR UP program, an Exemplary Program in Indian Education. It has helped to send over 1,000 students on to college in the past 15 years. The completion rate of GEAR UP students is over 90%, and the college entrance rate is over 80%. The program is an Exemplary Program in Indian Education and the winner of an outstanding program from the U. S. Education Department.
